Here is a trivia question you probably have never been asked. Which stadium was the first to be the home field to a NFL and college football team in the same season? The answer is Canisius Villa. From 1920 to 1921, the NFL’s Buffalo All-Americans and Canisius College shared Canisius Villa. Since then, 59 other stadiums have been the home field to both a major pro football and college football team during the same season.

Every Instance of a Pro Football and College Football Team Sharing a Stadium

Note: Both the pro football and college football team needed to play at least half of their home games at the same stadium in order for it to be counted as an instance of a shared stadium.

The 2013 season was counted; as were AAFC and AFL seasons.

Stadium names have changed often throughout history. A stadium is listed with its most current and/or most recognizable name.

Crowded Home Fields

In 1947, Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, CA, was the home field to pro football’s San Francisco 49ers, and college football’s Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, and Santa Clara.

In 1948, Griffith Stadium in Washington, DC, was the home field to pro football’s Washington Redskins, and college football’s George Washington, Georgetown, and Maryland. The Washington Senators of Major League Baseball also called Griffith Stadium their home that season.

From 1946-1949, and again in 1960, the L.A. Coliseum hosted two pro football teams as well as two college football teams in the same season.

Special thanks to Richard Topp from the American College Football Scorebook for confirming that George Washington played their home games at Griffith Stadium from 1937-1960.

Another special thanks to St. Norbert College Sports Information Director Dan Lukes; he confirmed that St. Norbert College played two homes games at Green Bay’s City Stadium in 1932.
