The All-America Football Conference was the first major professional sports league to place a team in the state of Florida; with the Miami Seahawks in 1946. The AAFC also gave consideration to placing teams in the states of Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. They would have been the first major pro league to put a team in any one of those states.
Listed below are all the cities that have applied or have been mentioned by major media outlets as potential locations for AAFC “expansion” teams. The list only includes AAFC teams.
The list is an ongoing project. I have created an extensive list, but I imagine there is still some missing information. If you have any cited information or leads please contact me.
I wanted to keep the list rather uncomplicated, but some explanation is still needed.
Each location has a small description explaining their bid for a team. Here is a guide on how to interpret those descriptions.
Founding Member - The team’s first season was in 1946, the AAFC’s inaugural season.
New Team / Relocated X – Technically a new franchise that a location received because another team moved there.
Aborted Plans to Join the AAFC – A location that the AAFC granted a team to, but for one reason or another never fielded a squad.
Interested in Joining the AAFC – A location that expressed interest in joining the AAFC.
Interested in Relocated Team – A location that was interested in obtaining a new franchise through a relocated team.
Proposed Founding Member – A location mentioned by the AAFC, and/or mainstream media as a potential location for a founding franchise in the AAFC.
Proposed AAFC Expansion
The list is organized by state, and then location in chronological order. Includes locations that were awarded teams, and the original composition of the AAFC.
