Thirty different states can lay claim to being the home to at least one of the 86 current or past franchises that have been members of the NFL, AAFC, or AFL.

New York and Ohio are at the top of the list – being the home to a total of 15 different franchises through out the history of major professional football.

Note: Also counted are the seasons in which a team played at least two “home” games at a temporary/part-time out-of-state location (i.e. New York Giants at New Haven, CT from 1973-74).

For the purpose of this tally merged teams were split. Merged teams: Boston Yanks-Brooklyn Tigers 1945; Chicago Cardinals-Pittsburgh Steelers, 1944; Philadelphia Eagles-Pittsburgh Steelers, 1943.
