With the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans enjoying their best ever starts, I thought it would be an appropriate time to review each NFL franchise’s best ever start to a season.

Each NFL Franchise’s Best Start to a Season

Note: Only undefeated/untied records were used to determine a franchise’s best start to a season.

The (city/nickname) in the parenthesis was the franchise’s city/nickname during their best start.

Additional Info

  • A little under a one-third of the league’s teams have taken a franchise best start all the way to a championship.
  • The 1948 San Francisco 49ers, are the only team to have their best start spoiled by another team also having their best start (Cleveland Browns).
  • The 1934 Detroit Lions, are the only team to have their best start spoiled in a shutout defeat. The Lions’ undefeated run through 1934 ended when the Green Bay Packers shut them out 3-0.
