In my opinion this weekend’s biggest sporting event is the Indianapolis 500. The race takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in a suburb appropriately named Speedway, IN. The racetrack is enormous, and you could certainly fit a football field inside the oval. But from what I could derive in my research, organized football has never been attempted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Regardless, football does have a place in the suburb of Speedway. The local high school fields a team nicknamed the Sparkplugs. A fitting nickname that pays homage to the racing history of Speedway. The Speedway Sparkplugs football team has never won a state title, but they have won three 2A regional titles (1998, 2001, 2005).
There isn’t anything else to say about this topic. As stated before, football has never taken place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But to give more content, I’ll list of some of the football game firsts in Indianapolis.
