From time-to-time bowl teams have received a home-field advantage in their bowl games. This year San Diego State receives that advantage when they play Brigham Young at their home stadium – Qualcomm Stadium – in the Poinsettia Bowl. It’s the 69th time that a college football team has played a bowl game in their home stadium.

Is there an advantage in playing a bowl game at your home field?

The sample size is too small and there are too many factors to define any real advantage, but here are a couple of facts to chew on:

  • Teams with the “home-field advantage” in bowl games have an all-time record of 41-25-2 (.618 W Pct). Since 2005, those teams have a losing record of 3-5 (.375 W Pct).
  • In bowl games involving two AP ranked teams, the team playing at home has a record of 11-11-1 (.500 W Pct).

Additional Info

  • Hawaii has played eight bowl games in their home stadium – more than any other school followed by Miami Florida (seven home bowl games), Texas-El Paso (seven), Arizona St. (six), and Fresno St. (six).
  • Arizona (2-0), Louisiana Tech (1-0), Nevada-Las Vegas (2-0), and Southern California (1-0) are all undefeated in home bowl games – while Duke (0-1), Florida (0-1), Rice (0-1), and Texas Christian (0-1) have never won home bowl games.
  • Fresno State’s 51-7 victory over Bowling Green (OH) in the 1985 California Bowl, is the greatest margin of victory a team has had in a bowl game played at home. On the flip side, San Diego State’s 53-0 loss to Hardin-Simmons (TX) in the 1948 (1947 season) Harbor Bowl, is the greatest margin of defeat a team has had in a bowl game played at home.
  • The Miami Hurricanes won three of their school’s five national championships in bowl games played at home – at the Orange Bowl in 1983, 1987, and 1991.
