While on Wednesday’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning” national radio show, Penn St. head coach Bill O’Brien brought up the idea of playing a 13th game against Hawaii. As you know Penn St. is now under a four-year bowl ban, and O’Brien said a game in Hawaii could “act as our bowl game at the end of the year“.

My personal opinion is that O’Brien should have kept this thought to himself. I know he has to work extra hard at trying to keep and entice players to Penn St. However, I don’t think the NCAA wants Penn St. playing any game that resembles anything close to a bowl. Thus the point of the bowl ban.

You can’t blame O’Brien though. He didn’t have an unprecedented idea. Arizona St. (1959), Alabama (2002 & 2003), and Southern California (2010) have all played non-conference games in Hawaii while they were under a bowl ban. To be fair, Arizona St. and Southern California had scheduled their games with Hawaii before they received a bowl ban.

Listed below are bowl-banned teams that have played non-conference away games in bowl-like atmospheres and/or locations.
