Every season schools from the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schedule schools from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Usually the games result in an easy victory for the FBS school, and a nice paycheck for the FCS school. But on a rare occasion, the FCS school pulls off an upset.

Listed below are the records current and former FBS schools have against FCS opponents, and the records current and former FCS schools have against FBS opponents.

Important notes on the classification of FBS and FCS schools:

In 1978, the NCAA split Division I football into two levels. The I-A level which is now known as the FBS, and the I-AA level which is now known as the FCS.

All of the records below go back to that split in 1978. The only games counted were the ones where a then FBS school played a then FCS school.

For the history of FBS (I-A) vs. NCAA Division II/III & NAIA click here.

Schools that were in the last year(s) of their FBS/I-A probationary period were counted as full FBS members.

Click here to see a list of schools that are or have been members of the FBS (I-A).

FBS (I-A) Schools vs. FCS (I-AA) Schools (1978-2013)

Remember: The only games counted were the ones where a then FBS school played a then FCS school (i.e. Massachusetts’ games against the FCS level when they were in the FCS weren’t counted).

Columns can be sorted by clicking on the titles in the header.

Defeating FCS Schools

  • FBS schools have a record of 2028-423-18 (.824) vs. FCS schools.
  • In 1982 and again in 2012, I-A/FBS schools recorded 96 victories over I-AA/FCS opponents. That mark is the single-season record for the most FBS vs. FCS victories. Followed by 2013 (95 victories), 2011 (91 victories), and 2009 (89 victories).
  • In 2008, FBS schools were 85-2 (.977) vs. FCS opponents; the best single-season FBS over FCS win percentage. Followed by 2005 (.963) and 2009 (.947).
  • In 2012, Oklahoma St. defeated Savannah St. (GA) 84-0 – setting a FBS record for the largest margin of victory over a FCS school.

Losing to FCS Schools

  • On four occasions a school ranked in the AP Poll has lost to a FCS opponent. In 1983, temporary I-AA (FCS) member Cincinnati defeated No. 20 Penn St. In 2007, Appalachian St. defeated No. 5 Michigan; in 2010, James Madison defeated No. 13 Virginia Tech; and in 2013, Eastern Washington defeated No. 25 Oregon St.
  • Among the schools that belong to a Power 5 conference, Louisville and Kansas St. have the most losses (7) to FCS opponents.
  • In 1981, then I-A (FBS) Pennsylvania lost to Lehigh 58-0; it’s the largest margin of defeat a FBS school has suffered against a FCS school.
  • FCS schools have shutout FBS schools on 22 occasions. The last time it happened was in 2006, when Richmond shutout Duke 13-0.
  • In 1978, I-A (FBS) schools lost 29 times to I-AA (FCS) opponents. It’s the single-season record for most losses by FBS schools against FCS schools. Followed by 1980 (26 losses) and 1985 (22 losses).
  • In 1978, I-A (FBS) schools were 41-29-1  (.585) vs. I-AA (FCS) opponents; their worst win percentage ever against the FCS. Followed by 1980 (.609) and 1981 (.632). Note: Against FCS opponents the FBS hasn’t had a winning percentage below .800 since 2000.

Additional Info

  • Army has played the most games against FCS schools (66 games). Followed by Louisiana-Lafayette (59 games) and Navy (54 games).
  • Notre Dame, Southern California, and UCLA, have never played a FCS-level school.
  • In 1982, the I-A (FBS) and I-AA (FCS) faced off 119 times; the most times in one season. Followed by 2013 (111 games), 2012 (106 games), and 1983 (98 games).
  • In 1997, the I-A (FCS) and I-AA (FCS) only faced off 35 times; the least amount of times in one season. Followed by 1994 (41 games) and 1995 (42 games).

Tex Noel, a well-cited and greatly respected college football historian, has launched a new website called Lighting-up the Scoreboard

His site is fairly new but he has already posted some great research on college football scoring. During the season he’ll continue to post new material and he’ll give weekly updates on teams approaching the 500+ point mark.

Be sure to bookmark his site: texnoel.wordpress.com

Here’s just a quick heads up on a great idea delivered by a guy with a lot of enthusiasm. A few months ago I received an email from Russ Thorson. He politely told me about his idea for the most patriotic football game to ever be played… The Freedom Bowl.

Thorson, a San Diego State alumn, has put together an 18-page document – complete with a stadium layout – that details what the Freedom Bowl would entail. You can check out his plan here.

Thorson’s idea is certainly more fantasy than reality at this point, but I respect and admire people who aren’t afraid to reach for the stars.

The NFL’s connection to small-town American is kept alive through training camps; even with more teams moving their camps to team-owned facilities. Right in their own backyards NFL fans in places such as Anderson, IN, or Mankato, MN, get an up-close and personal look at the NFL’s star athletes.

Listed below are all of the locations that have hosted a NFL, AFL, or AAFC training camp.

The difference between a training camp and a preseason practice session?  I considered it a training camp if the team began preseason workouts at the location, and/or held a significant portion of their preseason workouts at that location.

I’m still looking for training camp locations, especially ones from the 1920s to 1930s. If anybody has sourced additions please contact this site.

Sources: Click here to view the sources I used to compile this list. It’s a lengthy document but it’s organized by franchise.

Listed below are all the NFL’s home stadiums through the years.

The list also includes stadiums that were a temporary/part-time “home” for a NFL team on more than one occasion in any given season (i.e. Chicago Cardinals at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, MN, from 1959).

List of NFL Stadiums by Franchise (1920-2013)

Notes: W-L-T tallies only include games (regular season and postseason) in which the team was the designated home team. D=defunct franchise.

Stadium names have changed often through history. To be consistent a stadium is listed with their most current and/or recognizable name.

Columns can be sorted by clicking on the titles in the header. You can quickly find a specific team or stadium using the search box to the right.
