Appalachian State and Georgia Southern were the FBS’s new kids on the block this season, but they held their own by posting winning seasons.

Georgia Southern even won the Sun Belt Conference title with a perfect 8-0 record in conference games. They are the first team since Marshall (1997) to win a conference championship in their debut FBS season.

Debut FBS Seasons (Since 1987)

Note: The line between a FBS and FCS team is distorted. Transitional FBS members were sometimes considered part of the FBS or FCS depending on the media source. In my eyes a team was first a member of the FBS when they played the majority of their games vs. FBS opponents and/or the majority of the mainstream media mentioned them as a FBS team.

  • Florida Atlantic holds the record for the worst FBS debut. FAU went from a 9-3 record to a 2-9 mark in 2005.
  • Since 2005, six schools (out of the 11) have made their FBS debuts in the Sun Belt Conference.

Yesterday’s surprise upset by the Jacksonville Jaguars over the Cleveland Browns left the Oakland Raiders as the NFL’s last winless team. It’s the second time in the last nine years that the Raiders have taken this dubious honor.

Posted below is a listing of the last winless team(s) in each NFL season.

Click here for a list of the NFL’s last undefeated team(s) in each season.

Last Winless NFL Team(s) in Each Season

Note: The (city/nickname) in the parenthesis was the franchise’s city/nickname when they were the league’s last winless team.

The list also includes the last winless teams in each AFL and AAFC season.

The week in the schedule was used to determine the league’s last winless team, not the date.

Columns can be sorted by clicking on the titles in the header. You can search for a specific team or season using the search box to the right.

Some more facts…

The following franchises (5) have never been the NFL’s last winless team: Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Jets… The Broncos were the AFL’s last winless team in 1968. The Jets were the AFL’s last winless team in 1965 and 1967.

Since 1970, the Colts have been the NFL’s last winless team seven times; by far the most by any team since ’70. Followed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (five times), Cincinnati Bengals (four times), Buffalo Bills (three times), New Orleans Saints (three times), and San Diego Chargers (three times).

From 1922-1925 (four seasons) the Rochester Jeffersons were always one of the NFL’s last winless teams. It’s the most consecutive seasons a NFL team has been the last winless team. The 1960-1962 Oakland Raiders are the only other major professional football team to post three or more consecutive seasons as their league’s last winless team… The latest team to be the NFL’s last winless team in back-to-back seasons were the 1993-1994 Cincinnati Bengals.

In 1932, the Chicago Bears were the NFL’s last winless team. They would go on to win the league championship with a record of 7-1-6, beating the Portsmouth Spartans 9-0 in a unique de facto championship game… The NFL’s last winless team has never made it to an official playoff game… Since 1970, the 1990 Seattle Seahawks were the NFL’s only last winless team to finish the year with a winning record. They went from a 0-3 start to a 9-7 record.

In 1987, the New York Giants (0-5) were the NFL’s last winless team. It’s the only time that a defending Super Bowl champion was the NFL’s last winless team.

In 1981, the Washington Redskins were the NFL’s last winless team. In 1982 the Redskins bounced back and became the NFL’s last undefeated team, on their way to becoming Super Bowl champions.

Some more facts…

The following franchises have never lost to the NFL’s last winless team: Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Diego Chargers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, the Buffalo Bills (1 time), Denver Broncos (5 times), and San Diego Chargers  (1 time) all lost to a last winless team in the AFL.

Since 1970, the New York Jets have lost to the NFL’s last winless team four times; the most by any team since ’70. Followed by the Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, and Philadelphia Eagles, and Tennessee Titans who all lost three times to the NFL’s last winless team.

The 1985 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the NFL’s last winless team in ’85, shutout the St. Louis Cardinals 16-0 for their first victory of the season. Since 1970, it’s the only time the NFL’s last winless team delivered a shutout in their first victory of the season.

The 1988 Green Bay Packers, the NFL’s last winless team in ’88, defeated the New England Patriots 45-3. Since 1970, it’s the greatest margin of victory by a last winless team in their first victory of the season.

Since 1970, Week 9 has been the most common week for the NFL’s last winless team to win (seven times); last time was in 2009.

Week Five is in the books and every team in the NFL has suffered at least one loss. The Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals share the honor of being this year’s lone undefeated teams.

Since 1970, all but three of the NFL’s last undefeated teams have made it to the playoffs. The last to miss were the 1993 New Orleans Saints. It’s safe to say that the Bengals and Cardinals find themselves in mostly good company with this feat.

Posted below is a listing of the last undefeated team(s) in each NFL season.

Click here for a list of the NFL’s last winless team(s) in each season.

Some more facts…

The following franchises have never been the NFL’s last undefeated team: Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, and Seattle Seahawks… Note: The Jets were the AFL’s last undefeated team in 1966.

A little under one-fourth of all Super Bowl participants were the NFL’s last undefeated team in the season they made it to the Super Bowl.

The Rams have been the NFL’s last undefeated team five times since 1970; the most by any team since the AFL-NFL merger. Followed by the Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Minnesota Vikings whom have all been the NFL’s last undefeated team four different times.

From 1929-1932 (four seasons) the Green Bay Packers were the NFL’s last undefeated team; the most consecutive seasons a NFL team has been the last undefeated team… In the entire existence of the AAFC (1946-1949), the Cleveland Browns were the league’s last undefeated team (four seasons).

The Chicago Bears were the NFL’s last undefeated team on five occasions in the 1930s; the most times a team has been the league’s last undefeated team in a single decade… The St. Louis Rams franchise was NFL’s last undefeated team at least once in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s. They’re the only franchise to pull off that feat.

The 2013 Kansas City Chiefs were the first team since 1959 to become the league’s last lone undefeated team a season after posting the league’s worst record. In 1961, the Dallas Cowboys – 1960’s worst NFL team – were one of the league’s last undefeated teams, but with only a 2-0 record they shared the undefeated honors with two other NFL teams. In 1958, the Green Bay Packers posted a league-worst record of 1-10-1, but with Vince Lombardi at the helm in 1959 they started the season 3-0 and were the NFL’s last lone undefeated team. The ’56 Detroit Lions are the only other NFL team that became the league’s last lone undefeated team (6-0) a season after being the league’s worst team.

In 1996, the Indianapolis Colts were the NFL’s last undefeated team, but in 1997 the Colts fell on hard times and were the NFL’s last winless team.

Some more facts…

The following franchises have never defeated the NFL’s last undefeated team:  Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Seattle Seahawks.

Since 1970, the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, and New Orleans Saints have all defeated the NFL’s last undefeated team four times; the most in the NFL.

The 1961 Detroit Lions are the last undefeated NFL team to be shutout in their first loss of the season. Their 49-0 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers is also the greatest margin of defeat a last-undefeated team has suffered… The New York Jets were the AFL’s last undefeated team in 1966. They were shutout by the Houston Oilers 23-0 in their first loss.

Since 1970, Week 8 has been the most common week for the last undefeated team to fall (nine times); last time was in 1999.

In 1930 and again in 1931, the Chicago Cardinals gave the Green Bay Packers their first loss of the season. In both of those seasons the Packers were the NFL’s last undefeated team and would go on to win the NFL championship. Despite the huge upsets, the Cardinals would fail to post winning records in those seasons.

Seasons W-L-T Undefeated Team Packers W-L Score
1930 4-5-2 Green Bay Packers 8-0 13-6
1931 2-3 9-0 21-13

The following last winless teams, the 1999 Cleveland Browns, and 2005 Houston Texans, won for the first time after losing to the NFL’s last undefeated team the previous week.

Reddit user Tripp Jones was able to use the data listed above, and created a great chart showing how the NFL’s last undefeated teams have fared since 1970. The chart is an easier way to view some of the data above.

It was announced today that Chicago will host the 2015 NFL Draft. Thus ends New York City’s 50-year streak as the draft’s host. This will be the eighth time that Chicago has hosted the draft. The last time was back in December of 1963 (1964 Draft). Ironically that was also the last time the draft was held in a city other than New York.
