Week Five is in the books and every team in the NFL has suffered at least one loss. The Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals share the honor of being this year’s lone undefeated teams.

Since 1970, all but three of the NFL’s last undefeated teams have made it to the playoffs. The last to miss were the 1993 New Orleans Saints. It’s safe to say that the Bengals and Cardinals find themselves in mostly good company with this feat.

Posted below is a listing of the last undefeated team(s) in each NFL season.

Click here for a list of the NFL’s last winless team(s) in each season.

Last Undefeated NFL Team(s) in Each Season

Note: The (city/nickname) in the parenthesis was the franchise’s city/nickname when they were the league’s last undefeated team(s).

The list also includes the last undefeated team(s) in each AFL and AAFC season.

The week in the schedule was used to determine the league’s last undefeated team(s), not the date.

Columns can be sorted by clicking on the titles in the header. You can search for a specific team or season using the search box to the right.

Some more facts…

The following franchises have never been the NFL’s last undefeated team: Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, and Seattle Seahawks… Note: The Jets were the AFL’s last undefeated team in 1966.

A little under one-fourth of all Super Bowl participants were the NFL’s last undefeated team in the season they made it to the Super Bowl.

The Rams have been the NFL’s last undefeated team five times since 1970; the most by any team since the AFL-NFL merger. Followed by the Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Minnesota Vikings whom have all been the NFL’s last undefeated team four different times.

From 1929-1932 (four seasons) the Green Bay Packers were the NFL’s last undefeated team; the most consecutive seasons a NFL team has been the last undefeated team… In the entire existence of the AAFC (1946-1949), the Cleveland Browns were the league’s last undefeated team (four seasons).

The Chicago Bears were the NFL’s last undefeated team on five occasions in the 1930s; the most times a team has been the league’s last undefeated team in a single decade… The St. Louis Rams franchise was NFL’s last undefeated team at least once in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s. They’re the only franchise to pull off that feat.

The 2013 Kansas City Chiefs were the first team since 1959 to become the league’s last lone undefeated team a season after posting the league’s worst record. In 1961, the Dallas Cowboys – 1960’s worst NFL team – were one of the league’s last undefeated teams, but with only a 2-0 record they shared the undefeated honors with two other NFL teams. In 1958, the Green Bay Packers posted a league-worst record of 1-10-1, but with Vince Lombardi at the helm in 1959 they started the season 3-0 and were the NFL’s last lone undefeated team. The ’56 Detroit Lions are the only other NFL team that became the league’s last lone undefeated team (6-0) a season after being the league’s worst team.

In 1996, the Indianapolis Colts were the NFL’s last undefeated team, but in 1997 the Colts fell on hard times and were the NFL’s last winless team.

Some more facts…

The following franchises have never defeated the NFL’s last undefeated team:  Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Seattle Seahawks.

Since 1970, the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, and New Orleans Saints have all defeated the NFL’s last undefeated team four times; the most in the NFL.

The 1961 Detroit Lions are the last undefeated NFL team to be shutout in their first loss of the season. Their 49-0 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers is also the greatest margin of defeat a last-undefeated team has suffered… The New York Jets were the AFL’s last undefeated team in 1966. They were shutout by the Houston Oilers 23-0 in their first loss.

Since 1970, Week 8 has been the most common week for the last undefeated team to fall (nine times); last time was in 1999.

In 1930 and again in 1931, the Chicago Cardinals gave the Green Bay Packers their first loss of the season. In both of those seasons the Packers were the NFL’s last undefeated team and would go on to win the NFL championship. Despite the huge upsets, the Cardinals would fail to post winning records in those seasons.

Seasons W-L-T Undefeated Team Packers W-L Score
1930 4-5-2 Green Bay Packers 8-0 13-6
1931 2-3 9-0 21-13

The following last winless teams, the 1999 Cleveland Browns, and 2005 Houston Texans, won for the first time after losing to the NFL’s last undefeated team the previous week.

Reddit user Tripp Jones was able to use the data listed above, and created a great chart showing how the NFL’s last undefeated teams have fared since 1970. The chart is an easier way to view some of the data above.

  1. This is the 2nd time Andy Reid has been in charge of the last undefeated team in the League (also 2004 with PHI).

Dick Vermeil has gone one better than Reid as he has been the Coach of 3 different teams who have been last undefeated team in the League (1981 PHI, 1999 STL & 2003 KC).

Coaches who have led multiple teams to being the Last Undefeated Team in the League (since 1960)
    Dick Vermeil (1981 PHI & 1999 STL & 2003 KC)
    Lou Saban (1964 BUF & 1970 DEN)
    Don Shula (1967 BAL & 1972, 1984, 1992, 1995 MIA)
    George Allen (1970 LA & 1971 WAS)
    Andy Reid (2004 PHI & 2013 KC)

Another interesting bit of Trivia – In 2004 I recall Pittsburgh knocking off the last 2 undefeated teams in the League in consecutive weeks (both at home), Week 8 vs. NE and Week 9 vs. PHI.

I wonder how many other teams have done this particularly that late in the season?

  2. Great facts and figures as always Mark.

Interesting that George Allen (with two different franchises) led the last undefeated team in back-to-back seasons. He was the only coach to do that based on your research.

I did a quick look into your question, and it appears that the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers are the only team that has knocked off the league’s last two undefeated teams in consecutive weeks past Week 7. In 1944, the Bears beat the undefeated Packers (one of three last unbeatens) in what I’m calling Week 8, and then in Week 11 they beat the last undefeated team the Philadelphia Eagles.

  3. When the Packers became the last undefeated team in 2011, they were the first NFC team since the Eagles in 2004 to achieve that feat.

The 6 straight seasons (2005-2010) when the AFC had sole possession of the last undefeated team is the longest streak by either Conference since the merger.
